“What Doesn’t Kill You” speaks to opposing forces at work. It was initially painted in vibrant magentas and purples which were embedded with glitter. The top layer was then created to provide a contrast to the base layer. Thick, dark paint was added and scraped all over the surface. The dark hues almost completely obscure the warm image, leaving only a pizza-shaped window into the precious pinks in the previous stage. The darkness in the piece represents pain and sorrow, while the pinks represent naiveté and hope.
