PādaP’goda is a 27’x21’ double-layered kinetic pagoda that was one of the Honoraria Awardees from Burning Man which explores the dynamics of social interaction, interdependence, and expressions of AAPI heritage outside of Asia. It was co-created with Neil, Mike, Al , Ryan, Shelby, Leilani, Leila, Dalton, Amy, Matt, Josie, Lily, John, John G., and many others volunteers and community members.

This project grew from the need to offer a safe space for the Asian American community on playa. The piece is built from principles of reciprocal architecture, with minimal joints and fasteners. The experience of being Asian American often leads to the formation of a presentable facade, one which masks a deeper expression of our true emotions. The feeling of inner turmoil tucked away is represented in the construction of a kinetic inner core built within a static envelope. At the center of the piece, is a still core, the eye of the tornado, while the rest of the piece moves around them. The structure is created from the gradua augustfolia species of bamboo, and sourced second-hand from Gerald Minakawa from Bamboo DNA.
