dawn jian (b. 1991, Guangzhou, China) is a mixed-media artist whose practice spans painting, digital image-making, and hybrid processes. Raised between Canada and the United States, Jian brings a cross-cultural perspective to her work, bridging Eastern and Western visual traditions. In 2014, she completed a consecutive five-year BFA and MFA program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she was awarded an Honors Scholarship and multiple Community Grants.

簡丹(1991年生于中国广州)是一位跨媒介艺术家,创作涵盖绘画、数字图像制作及混合技法。她在加拿大和美国长大,多元文化背景使其作品融合东西方视觉传统。2014年,她以连续五年制本硕连读项目毕业于马里兰艺术学院(MICA),并获得荣誉奖学金及多项社区资助金。

In 2018, Jian was recognized as one of the Top Ten Young Artists of China by the Youth Art Commune. Since then, her work has been exhibited internationally across the United States and China. Recent presentations include exhibitions with 5+1 Gallery at the MOORDN Art Expo in Guangzhou (2025) and participation in the Shanghai Art021 Art Fair with HWAS Gallery (2024). In 2025, she received the Art Creator Award from the LeaderClub Cultural Association in Shanghai. That same year, she participated in the Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong, held a solo exhibition at Wyndham Social, and exhibited in group shows at the Mei Lanfang Headquarters in Shanghai and the Beijing Museum of Contemporary Art.

2018年,簡丹被青年艺术公社评为“中国十大青年艺术家”之一。此后,她的作品在中美多地展出。近期展览包括:2025年携5+1画廊参加广州MORDN艺术博览会,2024年与HWAS画廊参展上海ART021艺术博览会。同年,她获得上海领袖联盟文化协会颁发的“艺术创作者奖”。此外,她还参与了香港 Affordable Art Fair、在上环 Wyndham Social 举办个展,并亮相上海梅兰芳总部及北京当代艺术馆的群展。

Jian explores how images are formed, dispersed, and reconstituted between algorithmic systems and the physicality of paint. Her practice reflects an ongoing tension between control and spontaneity, tradition and technology, material and virtual space, and between traditional Chinese ink sensibilities and algorithmic image-making, often through a process of generating images with custom AI systems and reconstructing them through layered, gestural painting.

丹探讨了图像如何在算法系统与绘画的物理性之间被生成、散逸与重构。她的创作实践反映了控制与自发性、传统与技术、物质与虚拟空间,以及中国传统水墨感性与算法图像生成之间的持续张力——她开始通过使用定制的人工智能系统生成图像,再通过层层叠加、富有手势感的绘画方式对其进行重构。
